چکیده

Objective—To examine the relative adherence of Candida albicans to oral epithelial cells diVerentiated by Papanicolaou staining. Methods—Oral epithelial cells were collected from 10 healthy adults (five male, five female) and counted. Equal volumes of oral epithelial cells and candida were mixed and incubated. The epithelial cells from this mix were collected by filtration through 10 μm polycarbonate membrane filters. Cells retained on the membrane filters were stained with crystal violet followed by Papanicolaou stain. The number of yeast attached to each of 100 red, orange, and green staining oral epithelial cells was determined by direct microscopic examination. Results—C albicans had a higher level of adherence (p < 0.001) to red staining oral epithelial cells (mean (SD) number of candida attached to 100 oral epithelial cells 562 (159)) than to cells staining either orange (105 (47)) or green (161 (66)). Conclusions—Oral epithelial cell variability for candidal adherence is confirmed. The technique provides an opportunity to examine the relation between oral epithelial cell type and oral candidosis in specific groups, such as tobacco smokers, where increased epithelial cell keratinisation and candidal colonisation has been reported. Candida spp. adherence to oral epithelial cells and levels of IgA in children with orthodontic appliances.

Adhesion and colonization of the oral cavity by Candida albicans is an initial step in candidosis. Orthodontic and other oral appliances seem to favor candidal presence. The aim of this work was to compare the presence of Candida species in saliva, their adherence to oral epithelial cells, and the levels of anti–C. albicans IgA in children with or without orthodontic appliances. This study incl...

Cranberry proanthocyanidins inhibit the adherence properties of Candida albicans and cytokine secretion by oral epithelial cells

BACKGROUND Oral candidiasis is a common fungal disease mainly caused by Candida albicans. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of A-type cranberry proanthocyanidins (AC-PACs) on pathogenic properties of C. albicans as well as on the inflammatory response of oral epithelial cells induced by this oral pathogen. METHODS Microplate dilution assays were performed to determine the e...

Effects of octenidine and pirtenidine on adhesion of Candida species to human buccal epithelial cells in vitro.

Adherence of Candida spp. to buccal epithelial cells in vitro was significantly reduced after both short- and long-term periods of yeast exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of octenidine and pirtenidine. In addition, the pretreatment of either Candida or the epithelial cells or both with the drugs reduced adherence, this being greatest when both types of cells were pretreated. No differen...

Adherence of Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis to buccal and vaginal cells.

Twenty-seven Candida albicans strains and 26 Candida dubliniensis strains, isolated from HIV patients, were tested for their adherence to buccal and vaginal epithelial cells. Both species showed important levels of adhesion to buccal and vaginal epithelial cells, although C. albicans showed the highest levels of adhesion. These results suggest that both Candida species are well adapted, in term...

Effects of date extract on adhesion of Candida species to human buccal epithelial cells in vitro.

The adherence of three Candida species to human buccal epithelial cells (BEC) following treatment with different concentrations of date extract was investigated in vitro, as well as the effect of a mouth rinse with date extract on the adhesion of yeast to BEC. Adhesion of C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. kefyr to BEC was significantly reduced after both short- and long-term periods of yeast ex...
